Terms of Service

Effective Date: April 9, 2026

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of My Tree Story ("the Service"), operated by StanHattie LLC ("we," "us," or "our"), located in Des Moines, Iowa. By using the Service, you agree to these Terms.

1. Account Registration

You must provide accurate and complete information when creating an account. You are responsible for maintaining the security of your account credentials. You must be at least 13 years old to use the Service.

2. Subscription and Billing

  • The Service offers Free, Plus ($7.99/month), and Pro ($19.99/month) subscription tiers.
  • Paid subscriptions are billed monthly through Stripe. You authorize us to charge your payment method on a recurring basis.
  • You may cancel your subscription at any time. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period.
  • We reserve the right to change pricing with 30 days notice to existing subscribers.
  • Refunds are handled on a case-by-case basis. Contact us within 7 days of a charge for refund requests.

3. User-Generated Content

You retain ownership of all content you upload to the Service, including GEDCOM files and family tree data ("Your Content"). By uploading Your Content, you grant us a limited license to process, store, and display it as necessary to provide the Service, including sending data to third-party AI services for story generation.

You represent that you have the right to upload Your Content and that it does not violate any third party's rights.

4. AI-Generated Content

The Service uses artificial intelligence (Anthropic's Claude) to generate narrative stories based on your family tree data. You acknowledge that:

  • AI-generated stories are creative interpretations and may contain inaccuracies or fictional elements.
  • AI-generated content should not be relied upon as a factual historical record.
  • You may edit, share, and use AI-generated stories created from your data for personal, non-commercial purposes.
  • We do not guarantee the accuracy, completeness, or suitability of AI-generated content.

5. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

  • Upload content that is unlawful, harmful, or violates others' rights.
  • Attempt to reverse-engineer, disrupt, or overload the Service.
  • Use the Service for any commercial purpose without our written permission.
  • Share your account credentials with others.
  • Scrape, crawl, or use automated means to access the Service beyond its intended APIs.

6. Shared Content

When you create a shared link for your family tree, anyone with that link can view the shared data. You are responsible for managing who has access to your shared links. You may revoke shared links at any time.

7. Intellectual Property

The Service, including its design, code, and branding, is owned by StanHattie LLC. You may not copy, modify, or distribute any part of the Service without our permission.

8. Data and Privacy

Your use of the Service is also governed by our Privacy Policy. By using the Service, you consent to the collection and use of your information as described therein.

9. Service Availability

We strive to keep the Service available at all times but do not guarantee uninterrupted access. We may modify, suspend, or discontinue any part of the Service at any time with reasonable notice.

10. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, StanHattie LLC shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of the Service. Our total liability shall not exceed the amount you paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim.

11. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless StanHattie LLC from any claims, damages, or expenses arising from your use of the Service or violation of these Terms.

12. Termination

We may terminate or suspend your account at any time for violation of these Terms. Upon termination, your right to use the Service ceases immediately. You may request export of your data within 30 days of termination.

13. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Iowa, without regard to conflict of law provisions. Any disputes shall be resolved in the courts of Polk County, Iowa.

14. Changes to Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. We will notify you of material changes via email or through the Service. Continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance.
